F.A.Q.   (Frequently Asked Questions)
TTI answers hundreds of questions every week over the phone.  We have gathered up a broad range of commonly asked questions and we hope this section will provide you with satisfactory answers.  If you don’t find your answer below please feel free to contact our Customer Service Dept. by phone at (951) 371-4878 or email us at:  Info@ttiexhaust.com (please allow 3-5 business days for an email reply).
What size header tube is correct for my application?
The correct size tube is based on the horsepower range and application (ie. dragstrip / street car) and would differ from car to car based on engine components.

What size Exhaust System is correct for my application, 2.5” or 3”?
The correct size exhaust system is based on horsepower and application.  Generally if producing more than 400 hp, you can benefit from a 3” system.

Can I use different mufflers with my TTI Exhaust System other than the Dynomax Super Turbo’s?
Using other mufflers may require modification to the muffler slips (cutting & welding) for proper fit and alignment due to the muffler case length and width differences.  Applications using mufflers longer than TTI systems were designed for, will require shortening the outlet end of the H-pipe or X-pipe.  Using mufflers shorter than TTI systems were designed for, will require Slip-Connectors for additional length.  (Slip-Connectors are sold separately by TTI)

What can I do if my headers are hitting the steering box, steering linkage, torsion bar, etc...?
The headers are designed to fit the chassis with the engines located to the factory dimensions.  However, all K-members are not the same, the location of the engine mount pads on the K-member are not consistent and the fore and aft location and the width between the mounts differ.  Because of these variations it is often necessary to place shims between the K-member and the insulator assembly to shift the engine from side to side or to raise the engine up to meet the required factory placement dimensions.  If the engine sets to far forward on the K-member there could be interference with the idler arm or pitman arm of the steering linkage.  This problem can be resolved by slotting the mounting holes in the steel mount attached to the engine and moving the engine back in the chassis.  1/4” will normally solve the problem.  Due to the limited space in the engine compartment, it is imperative that the engine be setting in the correct location for the headers to clear all chassis components.

Why won’t my headers fit up into the engine compartment?
If the car is not quite high enough off of the ground, the headers may not be at enough of an angle to allow ease of installation.  The engine may also need to be raised up in the chassis.

Why don’t my header adapters fit my headers properly?
Due to variations beyond our control in other header manufactures production, there is a possibility of a flange rotation or angle being slightly different.  This can be corrected by cutting, rotating and welding the adapter in the proper position.  see more>

Will TTI’s Exhaust System fit with the rear springs moved inward (tubbed)?
Most systems will fit with slight modifications, 62-67 B-body and 67-76 A-body applications require using a fuel cell and different mufflers other than what the systems were designed with.

Where do I mount the Tailpipe Hanger Brackets?
Most applications mount in existing factory holes.  Some cars will require drilling a hole in the frame rail (where the bracket locates when the tailpipes are properly aligned) to accommodate the new hangers.

Why is my Exhaust System offset or misaligned?
The exhaust system must be installed from the rear to the front without tightening any bolts or clamping any tubes together.  Once all tubes are installed, adjusted and aligned properly, clearing all parts of the vehicle, then tighten all bolts and clamps.

What horsepower gains are to be expected with headers over manifolds?
Typically headers will increase horsepower by approximately 20% over manifolds.

Are Chrome plated or Ceramic coated headers the better way to go?
TTI recommends ceramic coated headers with a thermal barrier inside tubes.  Ceramic coating prevents rust and adds longevity to headers.  When the engine is tuned properly, ceramic coated headers will not chip, crack, peel or discolor and will also keep underhood temperatures dramatically cooler than chrome.  Chrome plated headers are basically a protective coating to help prolong rusting of the headers.  Chrome headers almost instantly blue in color when they are run on the vehicle.

What can I do to prevent header leaks?
Check the header flange sealing surface to make sure that it is clean and free of any foreign material.  Use a high temperature silicone on both sides of the gasket before installing.

Can I have O2 sensor bungs or Evac tubes installed on my headers?
Yes.  As a “Special Order” TTI can install all fittings prior to coating, at an additional charge.  Please allow additional delivery time for “Special Orders”.

Why is the tailpipe too close to the gas tank?
In most cases, if the tailpipe is too close to the gas tank, the tailpipe will need to be adjusted by rotating it in the muffler hanger.  The gas tank straps may also be loosened which will allow adjustment of the gas tank side-to-side to achieve adequate clearance.

Why do the tips stick out too far from the car?
TTI tailpipes were designed for vehicles that do not use tips.  With the option of using tips, you can cut some length off of the tailpipe end for proper position of the tips.

What if I don’t like the sound of the mufflers I got with my system?
All TTI exhaust systems were designed with the Dynomax Super Turbo mufflers (TTI’s preference).  Unfortunately, TTI will not exchange or refund mufflers due to personal sound preferences.

Why doesn’t TTI take credit card orders?
TTI’s manufacturing plant is not set-up to accept credit cards.  At TTI we design, manufacture and package each order in house and provide excellent customer service to bring you the best quality exhaust products available.  See our complete list of Authorized Distributors who will gladly accept your credit card orders.
